Description:
My grandfather’s pantry was always full of delicacies. He and my grandmother worked hard together to make it that way. They carefully tended the garden, the fruit trees, and the vegetables. During the long summer days, they cooked and preserved the harvest together, capturing the flavors of the season.
The jars filled with colorful fruits and the thick, slowly cooked tomato sauces stood neatly in rows on the shelves. There was always some hidden treat as well, something my grandmother had baked.
In summer, the tiny window was covered with paper so that only a softened light could filter through, keeping the warmth outside.
Everything remained this way until my grandmother’s death.
Then, slowly, the rows on the shelves began to empty. My grandfather’s thoughts had already drifted far away from reality. No new jar of preserves was ever placed on the shelf again.
