Description:
The painting presents a variety of abstract forms, from which the leg of a woman wearing blue pumps emerges. A portion of her blue skirt is also visible. The contrast between the figurative and the abstract creates a disorienting tension: we have to look twice in order to grasp what we are seeing, and we begin to question and speculate about the possible meaning of the image.
This uncertainty is the actual subject of the work – the question of whether, and how, we can interpret an image correctly. Our perception moves between recognition and doubt, between the attempt to establish a concrete connection between the elements and the realization that there may be no single, definitive interpretation.
The abstract areas also possess their own materiality and structure. I pressed textiles into the still-wet paint in order to capture their traces and transfer a sense of fabric and tactile quality onto the painted surface. This creates different visual and tactile structures within the fields of colour, further intensifying the tension between the recognizable and the abstract.
