flower, room, abandoned, vase

Description:

The starting point was a visit to abandoned barracks near Berlin and the photographing of the spaces and rooms found there. I drew inspiration from this location and the somber, melancholic atmosphere it conveys—one that evokes a sense of transience and absence.
The juxtaposition of dilapidated, worn walls and a still-life arrangement of fresh flowers creates an absurd, enigmatic situation. We do not know who once inhabited these spaces, nor do we know who arranged the flowers or with what intent. The freshness and fragility of the blossoms stand in stark contrast to the desolation of the rooms and the decay of the building.

The materiality and weight of the textile adhered to the left side of the image further reinforce that section of the composition. This contrasts with the loose, gestural quality of the multi-layered painting and the lightness of the drawn elements. The juxtaposition of these disparate materials and modes of expression simultaneously generates tension within the image and establishes an ambiguous relationship between the past, presence, and transience.
