Description:

This painting is a contemporary reimagining of the Annunciation, a tribute to Fra Angelico’s genius in spatial composition. I’ve long been intrigued by how such an iconic scene could be reinterpreted in a way that isn’t just a quotation, but a question posed to our present moment. The setting, of course, is Óbuda – as it so often is in my work. But here, Gabriel is absent. Perhaps he has already been here. Perhaps he will arrive. Perhaps he will never come. This absence is no accident. In the world of the original painting, the appearance of the heavenly messenger was not in question. Today, things are different. No one dictates what we should believe about the world, about fate, about God or salvation. The transcendent has not disappeared – it has simply taken on many forms. And our relationship to it has become much more personal, much more fragile. This painting speaks of that fragile certainty. Of waiting, of the possibility of interpretation, of open gates. The figure – who waits, who reflects, perhaps even doubts – is not necessarily Mary, but could be anyone among us. A contemporary person who pauses for a moment in this noisy, layered world, and listens: will there be an answer? Will someone come?
