mother, pregnancy, seed, motherhood
Description:
This series of nine handmade paper works explores the beginning of motherhood and the experience of pregnancy. Handmade paper is inherently fragile, much like a woman carrying her child beneath her heart.
Each piece is embroidered with a single word. Read in sequence, the words form a poem:
your existence / lives / within me / your life / I feared / every minute / we are two / one
The viewer may also isolate individual words and create new combinations, allowing the work to generate shifting meanings—for example: I feared every minute; I feared your existence; Within me lives everything.
Many mothers experience significant hair loss three to six months after giving birth as a natural hormonal process. After the birth of my second child, I collected the hair I lost during this period and used it to embroider the words into the paper.
The final piece contains soil and a seed, inviting the viewer to water it and witness the possibility of new life.
