Space Within the Plane

„In truth, every painted representational depiction is an illustration done from a model in nature, and is thereby simultaneously an abstraction of that model. Just in the fact that painting projects three-dimensional models onto a flat plane, it necessarily changes and defamiliarizes these models as well. Non-objective painting avoids this reduction of dimensions.” (Dietmar Elger) Geometric painting seemingly eliminates the third dimension – the question, however, is whether it can truly be eliminated. Even if an image dispenses with traditional perspectival representation, a single color in itself can evoke a sense of space; likewise, the relationships between planes and forms, and the interplay of contrasts and proportions, create a spatial effect. The works presented in the exhibition explore this paradox: some of them appear to “pull back” spatial extension into the plane, while the forms and colors appearing on the two-dimensional canvas evoke three-dimensional relationships.
