Description:

This work is part of the series titled "Reality Combinations" which contains eight prints, each one printed on 60x80 cm paper. The etching series was created in 2018 at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, as the project for my final exam in printmaking. Each piece shows one individual facade, composed with the intent of placing them next to each other, thus imitating the order of an existing streetscape. I used copper plates of different sizes for every single house, following the proportions of the real buildings seen on Dózsa György Street. This part of the process came to life with the help of several photos taken during my research. The idea behind this series mainly comes from a personal experience: the act of observing one's surroundings, which translates into the general experience of a passerby in an urban environment. During the process of taking in the details of a given space while existing in it, reality, perceived reality and imagination can blur together. I was born in the countryside, therefore life in the capital had a fresh and meaningful influence on my creative process and choice of subjects. I kept noticing the repetition of certain motifs, which either served as points of orientation or played a role in shaping my image of the city, while simultaneously defining my attachment to it. Finding myself in the role of the stranger, the outsider led me to the idea, that these urban spaces are made up of elements that represent home for someone and the unknown for someone else. In addition, the series also examines the mechanism of visual fantasy and the creative act of building an imaginary world. The style and technique were chosen by taking into consideration my interest in comic illustration, and architectural blueprints. The result visible to the viewer is nothing but a version of reality that has been filtered, reduced, or supplemented by a third party - the creator.
